The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has agreed to provide USD 107 million for the development of the Sri Lanka's Agriculture industry.
Minister of Agriculture Mahindananda Aluthgamage Wednesday met with the representatives of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and requested them to support the development of agriculture in the island nation.
At the discussions held at the Ministry, the FAO representatives have agreed to provide USD107 million for the production of chilies and red onions in the country, the Minister said.
It was also agreed to equip the farmers of this country with modern agricultural technology and to provide the necessary training.
During the discussions, the FAO representatives have agreed to increase local milk production in the country, to train dairy farmers, to repair Milco's cold storages and to provide modern equipment.
They agreed to share the knowledge and resources needed to formulate a national policy on agriculture, as well as practical experience in developed countries.
They also agreed to provide provisions including laboratory facilities especially for the National Organic Fertilizer Programme.
Accordingly, the delegates agreed to provide a grant of USD 500,000 for the future of agriculture in this country.
Representatives of the Food and Agriculture Organization emphasized that steps would be taken to provide all possible assistance in the process of building a productive economy.
