The Prime Minister's Office has denied news reports which said that Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has given approval to bury those who die due to Covid-19, TheLeader.lk news website reported.
According to them, a senior official in the Prime Minister's Office when contacted has pointed out that the Prime Minister had only stated that 'burials are allowed' but that did not mean that it would apply to those who have succumbed to Covid-19.
"The official further stated that when SJB parliamentarian S.M. Marikkar raised the issue, the Premier had only stated that 'burials are allowed' but he never specified that the bodies of those who have been infected with Covid-19 would be allowed to be buried," theleader.lk reported.
The international community including the United Nations have raised concerns with the government's mandatory cremation policy. The World Health Organisation (WHO) and Sri Lankan doctors’ groups have repeatedly said that COVID-19 victims can either be buried or cremated.
