The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) will not be abolished and instead its board of directors has been reconstituted.
With the new structural changes, measures will be taken to improve the efficiency of the system that would ultimately benefit the general public, a top official of the commission said.
The government will amend PUCSL Act, No.35 of 2002 to address several loopholes to improve and make necessary changes in the existing system to serve the needs of consumers.
The new steering plan will be set in motion very soon to improve the quality of services rendered to the public by three main utilities Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) , Ceylon Petroleum Corporation(CPC) and National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB), he revealed.
The wide spread information relating to impending abolition of the Commission has stirred controversy across multiple platforms with civil activists and opposition parties alleging that the underlying motive behind the move is fraudulent.
PUCSL in a media release quoted newly appointed Chairman Janaka Ratnayake as saying that there was no such move and the intention was to improve the quality of service of electricity water and fuel supply sectors protecting the rights of consumers and work for their betterment.
Several megaprojects and 100 other projects will be implemented this year under the PUCSL steering plan to improve efficiency and quality and productivity of these sectors, he disclosed.
Mr. Ratnayake was speaking at a ceremony organised in connection with his assumption of office as the new chairman of the commission in Colombo on Monday (8).
He revealed that several new mega power projects in four sectors of Electricity supply in accordance with the national power supply plan, without naming the relevant four fields.
