Although cannabis was widely used by our forefathers as a medicinal herb, it was declared a banned substance in our country only to bring in foreign owned tobacco companies, the General Secretary of the Bodu Bala Sena Ven. Galaboda Aththe Gnasara Thero said.
Speaking to the 'Jay Experience' YouTube channel on the upcoming 73rd Independence Day celebrations, Gnanasara Thero said that even after a lapse of 73 years, Sri Lanka has not been able to change it.
He pointed out that toddy can also be considered as a medicine but if you consume it in excess, it will be harmful to you.
"As such, there's a question of whether we truly have freedom," he said.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Federation of Traditional Medical Practitioners of Sri Lanka Ven. Bengamuwe Nalaka Thero also called on the government to legalise the cultivation of cannabis for medical purposes.
Addressing a media briefing in Colombo recently, Ven. Nalaka Thero averted that even Lord Buddha had identified cannabis as a plant with medicinal benefits.
