"There is a special similarity between the Department of Pensions and the Ministry of Power as there is a close relationship between the amount allocated annually for pensions and the amount spent on fossil fuels for power generation.
This is an indication of the current state of affairs with regard to the power and energy sectors. Fossil fuels cause a huge burden to the economy of this country. This amount is more than Rs. 300 billion.
The President's 'Visions of Prosperity and Splendour' Policy Statement noted that fossil fuels should be replaced by natural energy sources.
As a Ministry, we are dedicated to reducing this amount to 5% by 2025 and to stop this wasteful spending on fossil fuels by 2030.
It will be a victory for us as a nation.
As an initial step towards this goal, a special loan scheme has been introduced to promote the installation of rooftop solar panels and I would like to thank the Regional Development Bank (RDB) for their continuous efforts to involve the general public in this regard,” Dullas Alahapperuma said.
