Govt. to increase the legal minimum age of employment to 16

The Sri Lankan government is planning to introduce legislations to amend the country's labour laws in order to change the minimum age of employment from 14 to 16 years of age.

Accordingly, the government will bring amendments to four Acts relating to the field of labour in Parliament, a spokesman for the Labour Ministry said.

Labour Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva stated that the main objective of these amendments is to increase the age of recruitment of a Sri Lankan to 16 years with the decision taken by the government to increase the compulsory education in the country to 16 years recently.

He said that these amendments will be made in accordance with the Convention on the Elimination of Child Labour of the International Labour Organization (ILO), which was signed and ratified by Sri Lanka.
