A new fire broke out on a supertanker carrying about two million barrels of oil in the Indian Ocean off Sri Lanka's eastern coast as Russian and Indian warships joined the battle to put out the blaze.
The New Diamond, travelling from Kuwait to the Indian port of Paradip with a cargo of 270,000 tonnes of crude and 1,700 tonnes of diesel, issued a distress call on Thursday (03), Navy spokesman Captain Indika de Silva said.
Meanwhile, an individual who worked in the boiler room of the MT New Diamond Crude Oil Tanker had died, Sri Lanka Navy Spokesperson, Captain Indika De Silva said on Friday (Sep 04).
According to Captain Indika De Silva, this was confirmed based on statements from the crew of the vessel.
A total of 22 crew members who served on board the MT New Diamond Crude Oil Tanker were rescued.
