A cold war is brewing between Minister Namal Rajapaksa and Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage, the 'Lanka Lead News' website maintained under the guidance of Minister Wimal Weerawansa reported.
Accordingly, Mahindananda Aluthgamage made a special revelation before the general election stating that the Sri Lankan cricket team had fixed the final match of the 2011 World Cup to India. However, he reiterated that none of the players were involved in it.
Under such circumstances, the new Minister of Sports Namal Rajapaksa had raised strong objections to Aluthgamage's allegations of match fixing when it first came out. Furthermore, Kumar Sangakkara who captained the team at the alleged match and Mahela Jayawardene, who scored a century for Sri Lanka, have both been appointed to the National Sports Council by Minister Rajapaksa.
However, in response to Aluthgamage's allegations, Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene said that a match could not be fixed without the explicit involvement of the players and that if the players had betrayed, they should be able to prove it.
The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) on Prevention of Offenses Relating to Sports’ which investigated the 2011 Cricket World Cup match-fixing allegations concluded its investigations on July 3, as it found no evidence, which proves the Cricket World Cup final was fixed.
However, Mahindananda criticised the failure of the SIU to conduct an independent investigation into the serious allegation of match-fixing and noted an investigation in this regard should be conducted by the International Cricket Council.
