Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka MP, speaking in parliament today, said that he would like to propose to bring an amendment to the Constitution making it compulsory for the Head of State, Defence Chiefs and other important personnel holding top Government posts to be subjected to annual mental health checks.
Citing the United States as an example where the Head of State along with Defence service chiefs in charge of nuclear arsenals are required to undergo a mental health test, he said that the same should be applied to Sri Lanka.
"I suggest that similar laws should be in place in Sri Lanka as well,” he said.
He also said that such laws had become a necessity considering the fact that repeated unsubstantiated allegations were leveled against him by president Sirisena with regard to a plot to assassinate the president.
