President Maithripala Sirisena left for Iran today (12), for a two day state visit at the invitation of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani. Sirisena will hold talks with Rouhani on strengthening cooperation in the energy sector and will also seek Iranian investment, the Presidential Media Division said.
The two leaders are expected to sign a memorandum of understanding on "further strengthening the economic and trade ties between the two countries".
The visit comes as world leaders scramble to salvage a key nuclear deal with Iran after President Donald Trump withdrew the United States from the accord.
President Sirisena is scheduled to attend a special Investment and Trade Forum organised by the Iranian Chamber of Commerce and will also visit the Iranian Parliament.
